A baby carrier (also called a baby sling or babywearing carrier) is the hands-free way to carry your baby from newborn to toddler. It is one of the most-used pieces of baby gear in the first two years — for walks, shopping, public transport, and settling a fussy baby. The right carrier keeps your baby ergonomically supported (hips in the natural “M” position) while protecting your back, and choosing one is mostly about matching positions, weight limits, and fabric to how you plan to use it.
The two soft-carrier standards referenced by premium brands are EN 13209-2:2015 (European) and ASTM F2236 (US). Beyond standards, look for carriers certified by the International Hip Dysplasia Institute — this confirms the seat supports the baby’s thighs with hips in the ergonomic “M” position rather than dangling legs. All carriers on this page are hip-healthy certified and machine-washable.
At $200–$300 you get a premium all-position buckle carrier (BabyBjörn Carrier One at $209, Ergobaby Omni 360 from $296.65). Above $300, expect premium woven fabrics and refined ergonomics (BabyBjörn Carrier Harmony at ~$340). Budget carriers under $100 are usually single-position or wrap-style — fine for short carries, but they lack the lumbar support and hip-healthy certification of the premium segment.
