AS/NZS 2172:2013 is the mandatory Australian standard for cots. It covers: slat spacing (50-95mm to prevent head entrapment), mattress base strength (must support 20kg static load), drop-side prohibition (drop-side cots have been banned in Australia since 2009), and chemical safety (paints and finishes must be non-toxic). For SIDS prevention, Red Nose Australiarecommends: place baby on their back, use a firm flat mattress with no gaps, keep the cot free of bumpers/pillows/toys, and position the cot in the parents’ room for the first 6-12 months.
