Extended rear facing (ERF) means keeping your child rear-facing beyond the legal minimum of 6 months. Rear-facing distributes crash forces across the entire back, neck, and head — reducing spinal injury risk by up to 5x compared to forward-facing for children under 2. Australian best practice (Neuroscience Research Australia, Kidsafe) recommends rear-facing until at least 2-3 years, or as long as the seat's rear-facing limit allows. ERF seats support rear-facing to 18-25 kg (approximately 4-6 years).
Axkid Minikid 4 (Swedish, ~$799-$999 AUD) rear-faces to 25 kg (~6-7 years) and is Swedish Plus Tested — the world's toughest car seat standard beyond AS/NZS 1754. It is imported and may not be readily available at all Australian retailers. InfaSecure Quattro (Australian, ~$499-$699 AUD) rear-faces to ~30 months and is Australian-made to AS/NZS 1754:2024.
